DIY Cabinet Toe Kicks

Once you have your cabinets installed, it's critical to add toe kicks to seal off the space underneath. We used 1"x6" surfaced four sides (S4S) poplar wood for this project. The wood and the stain together were cheaper than the thin prefabricated toe kicks while giving us more versatility and durability. Toe kicks can be built and installed with basic tools as long as you take the time to measure and cut carefully. Generally you won't need to add shoe molding to your toe kick unless there is a gap between the toe kick and flooring. Our local home improvement store was able to match the stain color of our cabinets which saved a ton of time versus blending stains ourselves. We also cut out an opening for the vent using a circular saw, a drill, and a handsaw. See below for the vent conversion kit.
