Mauna Loa Trail to Red Hill Cabin - Big Island, Hawaii

The hike to the Pu'u 'Ula'ula cabin within Volcanoes National Park is a study in contrast. The trail head at 6,632 feet lies within a lush forest, filled with an abundance of life. This landscape soon gives way to a sterile, baron expanse of lava. It seems like you are on a different, primeval planet, far from anything familiar. The cabin is situated within the center of a protected cinder cone, and offers much appreciate refuge from the elements. The panoramic view from the rim surrounding the cabin is unbelievable, as you can see both the wet and dry sides of the big island at once.
