Cyndi Lauper - That's What I Think, at American Music Awards 1993

Em 1993 Cyndi Lauper lançou seu 4° álbum de estúdio, em carreira solo, Hat Full Of Stars.
Cyndi apresentou uma verdadeira obra prima, abordando temas polêmicos, em um tom mais maduro.
As letras de muitas das músicas falavam sobre as experiências vividas por Cyndi e as pessoas que dividiram a jornada com ela.
Como em Sally's Pigeons, em que Cyndi conta a história de uma amiga da adolescência, Sally, que teve sua vida ceifada tão cedo ao tentar se submeter a um aborto, em uma clínica clandestina.
Ou Broken Glass, inspirada nas agressões físicas cometidas por seu padastro contra sua mãe.
Ou ainda Lies, sobre os abusos cometidos por esse mesmo padastro mas contra a própria Cyndi.
Tem um hino incrível contra o preconceito, A Part Hate (Acabe com o Ódio) em uma alusão ao Apartheid, a terrível separação dos negros pelos brancos, na África do Sul, que ainda existia naquele momento (o apartheid durou de 1948 à 1994) mas também se remetendo à onda de racismo crescente nos EUA e as reações a esse preconceito, o que gerou diversos conflitos violentos.
A Part Hate expõe a face monstruosa do racismo mas termina com uma mensagem de esperança em cada refrão.
O álbum também traz as belíssimas Who Let In The Rain e Hat Full Of Stars, sobre o fim do relacionamento de uma década com seu antigo namorado e empresário, David Wolff. Bem como a encantadora Feels Like Christmas, que Cyndi compôs para o seu atual marido David Thornton.
O primeiro single foi a belíssima Who Let In The Rain, que fala sobre o fim de um relacionamento amoroso "Eu arrumei a cama e cobri onde você costumava dormir. Eu lembro de todas aquelas promessas feitas nesses lençóis".
A música escolhida como segundo single do álbum foi a deliciosa That's What I Think, que aborda as dificuldades da vida moderna nos centros urbanos "o aluguel está atrasado e os bolsos estão vazios" mas também sobre como é bom ter alguém ao seu lado "eu esqueço o mundo e tudo à minha volta, é isso que eu penso quando eu penso em você".
A música teve influência de ritmos do hip hop mas também o pop inigualável que Cyndi domina.
Nessa performance, no American Music Awards, de 1993, Cyndi entra em grande estilo, apresentada pelo querido Kenny Rogers, que nos deixou recentemente, e manda muito bem, como costuma fazer, acompanhada por sua incrível banda, e leva os sortudos lá presentes ao delírio.
O álbum tinha tudo para levar Cyndi de volta aos primeiros lugares das paradas, não fosse a visão tão limitada dos executivos da gravadora naquela época.

Cyndi presented a true masterpiece, addressing controversial themes, in a more mature tone.
The lyrics of many of the songs spoke about the experiences lived by Cyndi and the people who shared the journey with her.
As in Sally's Pigeons, in which Cyndi tells the story of a teenage friend, Sally, who had her life cut short when trying to have an abortion, in a clandestine clinic.
Or Broken Glass, inspired by the physical aggressions committed by her stepfather against her mother.
Or Lies, about the abuses committed by that same stepfather but against Cyndi herself.
It has an incredible anthem against prejudice, A Part Hate, in an allusion to Apartheid, the terrible separation of blacks by whites in South Africa, which still existed at that time (apartheid lasted from 1948 to 1994) but also referring to the growing wave of racism in the USA and reactions to this prejudice, which has generated several violent conflicts.
"A Part Hate" exposes the monstrous face of racism but ends with a message of hope in each chorus.
The song chosen as the second single from the album was the delicious That's What I Think, which addresses the difficulties of modern life in urban centers " the rent is due and pockets are empty" but also about how good it is to have someone by your side " I forget the world and everything around me, that's what I think when I think about you ".
The music was influenced by hip hop rhythms but also the unparalleled pop that Cyndi dominates.
