Decades ago, a disaster struck the Chernobyl nuclear power plant that resulted in the explosion of a reactor and radiation contamination to the surrounding areas. The accident released more radiation into the atmosphere than the attack on Hiroshima by the United States in 1945, yet there were comparably fewer consequences thanks to the quick action of emergency relief workers and the isolation of the site of the incident relative to other cities in Ukraine.
