It’s time for another edition of our series Bottled Lightening where we celebrate a song or album that was king for a day. Here honor artists and bands and that rocketed up the charts… but for reasons unknown weren’t able to sustain that success. Called by some ‘one-hit wonders’, we celebrate them instead as lightning in a bottle. On previous episodes we have covered You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) by Dead or Alive, Der Kommisar by After the Fire, and Too Shy by Kajagoogoo. For today’s installment we're featuring a band that really only had one hit in America, but to call them a one-hit wonder would be a mistake… as they had three chart-topping hits in one year 1984 in the UK as well as a #2, and a #4. And plenty more success around the world. So we’re looking at this one as more of a bottled lightning moment in the 80s. The band? It’s Frankie Goes to Hollywood who taught the whole world to “Relax.”

Formed in Liverpool, England in the early 80s, Frankie Goes to Hollywood consisted of vocalist and former Big in Japan bassist Holly Johnson, vocalist Paul Rutherford, guitarist Brian “Nasher” Nash, bassist Mark O’Toole, and drummer Peter “Ped” Gill. There are two stories surrounding the origin of the band’s name. One states that the band named themselves after a magazine article talking about Frank Sinatra’s desire to appear in films. While another claims the Frankie name came from a Liverpool newspaper headline about singer-slash-actor Frankie Vaughan. Either way, the moniker would prove to be unforgettable.

It would take about two years after forming before Frankie really started making commercial headway. The breakthrough moment came when they appeared on the popular British TV program The Tube in 1983 giving a leather-clad performance of Frankie’s soon-to-be signature track: Relax.
