Night time with the Elephants | Followed by a new morning with Khanyisa, her sheep and herd

A unique view of an evening with Khanyisa and the elephants, first in the orphanage and then at the stables, followed by a new morning, rising with Sebakwe and the other elephants and starting the day with Lammie, Nungu and Khanyisa, before the calf heads out for a new walk!

Adine takes you through her evening at the nursery, with her companions, Nandi and Abraham, the dogs, waiting patiently while she sees to the elephants. Carer, Herman is out in the garden with the children, as Adine puts it. Once they've finished playing, Khanyisa and her sheepy pals return in the dark light following sunset, to their nursery. Khanyisa goes inside for a bite of her branches and bana grass, while Lammie and Nungu take their time coming in. Khanyisa winds down, slowly getting ready for bed, as the insects of the bush sing their songs loudly and proudly.

Adine heads over to the herd in the stables and their private gardens, and spots Jabulani and Mambo sleeping on the mounds, in the dark - fast asleep. Next door to them is Tokwe and Timisa, the two females still awake and happy to catch up with Adine. Adine talks to Tokwe like a friend, like a respected elder, like a fellow mother, asking her what to do about the rise of poaching and snaring around us in various parts of Africa.

Tokwe shares her section of the stables with Fishan, who is fast asleep in the darkness, and the youngsters: Timisa, Kumbura, Limpopo, Pisa. Lundi shares her area with the two sleeping bulls, Jabulani and Mambo.

The next morning the elephants wake to a new day and you can see Sebakwe standing up after sleeping on his mound, together with Setombe and Klaserie, with whom he shares his stable grounds. Next to them are Zindoga and Bubi, and a sleeping Somopane.

Nandi is wide awake and patiently waiting for Adine as she feeds Lammie and Nungu some pellet treats. Khanyisa grazes out in the garden on a slightly windy day, with her sheepy companions following after her until carer, Reply comes to collect her and escort her to the herd for the day's walking through the wilderness.

Khanyisa will continue to stay at the nursery overnight at least until she is two years old, which is September this year, but likely a short time after too, as our Care Team continue to monitor her weight, energy and dung through the day and night, and give her milk bottles every three hours in the night. Like other elephants, Khanyisa wakes up here and there through the evening, and drinks and plays in between her naps. As the weather gets colder again with winter approaching, keeping Khanyisa warm and strong in the nursery is vital and helps our team ensure her health and wellness as she continues to grow and thrive and change.

Kumbura and Timisa are waiting for Khanyisa at the gate and enjoying some grass grazing of their own, before heading off.
