Example of Resource Guarding 🚨 #shorts
Here’s an example of resource guarding between my two dogs — and spoiler 🚨 nothing actually comes from it!
They’ve built a long history of communicating well 🐾 so I rarely have to step in. I actually caught this on video by accident and didn’t realize the full scope of what was really happening until about halfway through. In another situation, or with a different pair of dogs, noticing that late could’ve been too late!
Resource guarding is a totally normal behavior in dogs, and in Wrigley’s case, she loves her snacks and doesn’t want Fenway taking it all - fair enough.
I’ve built a strong reinforcement history for Wrigley when Fenway’s around 🦴 which helps moments like this stay peaceful. This essentially means I have chosen to reward her MANY, MANY times for when Fenway is around during training sessions. Which now results in this interaction not going any further. If I were to have noticed in real time the full scope of what was happening, I would have chosen to reinforce Wrigley much earlier for when Fenway come in the room. However, this is the power of a strong reinforcement history! I missed the opportunity to reward her right away, and she still did the thing I would want her to do in this situation.
Resource guarding is normal — but it can go wrong if communication breaks down 💥 or the dogs don’t have trust yet, or if dog guardians aren’t noticing all of these small signals, OR you do everything perfectly and your dogs still just have a hard time with this.
If your dogs struggle with this, reach out to a qualified behavior professional. Every case is different and may need an individual approach. 💛
