With my second trip to New York City in less than a month well underway, I wanted to do something unique for my next food adventure. Come with me as my friends and I do the ultimate fuchka challenge in NYC and eat lots of Bengali street food in Queens!

We traveled to Jackson Heights to Tong Bangali Street Food, the very first fuchka street food cart in America! The owner, Naeem, would be assisting my friends Steve, Tasos, and I as we try to eat as many fuchkas as we can!

But what exactly are fuchkas? Fuchka is the Bengali name for pani puri, an Indian street food favorite that also goes by the names golgappa, phuchhka, and gupchup, depending on where you are in India.

The dish consists of leavened, hollow balls of dough that the vendor fills with a mixture of different ingredients. Aloo (potatoes) and chana (chickpeas) are common ingredients, and sometimes other vegetables, herbs, chutneys, and spices are added along with a flavorful masala-rich water called pani.

You have to eat them fast so they don’t get soggy, and you eat them in one big bite! As soon as you bite down, the mixture washes over your palate, creating a heavenly flavor profile that’s sweet, sour, spicy, and savory all at once! There’s nothing on Earth like it!

I first tried fuchka back in early 2018, in Mumbai (where they call it pani puri). I fell in love with it then, and ever since then, I seek it out whenever I travel to India. Lately, I’ve been finding it at Indian restaurants in the U.S.!

Over the past few years, I’ve started doing pani puri challenges to see how many I can eat in one sitting! Sometimes, I do them against myself, and a few times, I have challenged friends of mine.

My very first challenge was on the streets of Tezpur in the state of Assam back in March of 2019, and since then, I’ve done it several times, including at home in Miami and in Karachi, Pakistan. I usually top out around 40 or so, but I had a feeling I could break my record today!

We’d be doing a mix of regular fuchka and doi fuchka, which adds a sweet yogurt, sev, and other toppings!
