My adventures in León, Nicaragua continued with an adventure in the local central market! Come with me as I try Nicaraguan street food in the Mercado Central in León, Nicaragua!

My guide Carlos and I would be checking out everything there, from the food to the clothing to the produce, and everything in-between!

Right away, we came across produce vendors selling potatoes, bananas, papayas, green peppers, pineapple, cassava, and starfruit. They all looked fantastic!

It was 7:30 in the morning, so all of the vendors were starting to put their fresh produce out. I tried a spicy pepper from another vendor. It was good but the heat built over time!

Elsewhere, we got a fresh fruit cocktail made with fresh pineapple, banana, papaya, and watermelon, along with juice! It was nice and refreshing after the chili!

Another customer let me try a bit of her cacao-based drink with cinnamon. It was amazing and so chocolatey. I really liked the cinnamon and how frothy it was!

Next was sopa de leche, a custard-like sweet served on a banana leaf. It was served hot and super sweet! It reminded me a lot of flan! It was really delicious and rich and fell apart in my mouth!

At another vendor, I tried a bit of cacao powder with corn flour. I also tried jicaro seeds, rice, and cinnamon ground into a powder. I liked it, but the cacao was better!

Next, we saw some chicha de maiz rojo and walked past some Captain America and Spider-Man pinatas before finding some smoked cheese at a stall called Ena Lucia. It was a thick, white cheese! They grill the entire block of cheese!

Then, I had some smoked cheese with chili at the same vendor’s stall. It was smoky, spicy, and crumbly! Next was a corn tamale with cheese balls and tortillas.

I loved the combination. I loved the cheese. It was nice and dense. After that, we came across a breakfast vendor selling eggs, gallo pinto, maduro, chicken stew, beef stew, and more.

I was getting full already, so we skipped the breakfast food for now and tried some fried chips.

In the meat section, we saw chicharron, fried calf, and Nicaraguan blood sausage called moronga. The moronga was huge and cost roughly $0.80. It contained rice inside and was like a dense, iron-rich bread and blood patty. I’d never seen a blood sausage like this!

In the butcher section, we saw some fish vendors selling red snapper and catfish. Everything was so friendly. There were also live crab, baho, and lots of meat!

Outside, we found more vegetables and clothing, including baseball and soccer jerseys. I tried a sweet corn flan that was pink!

Next, the vendor put some corn pudding and amotta de atole with corn and pineapple in my hand for me to try. I liked it even more than the other one!

From there, we walked to Cosa de Horna Doña Adilia, a 105-year-old bakery that sells sopa de leche, quesadillas, empanadas, perrereque, and pan de arroz.

We tried one of each, starting with the quesadilla. It was very different from the quesadillas I’m familiar with, and was basically cornbread with cheese inside. It tasted like Brazilian pao de queijo.

The pan de arroz didn’t contain cheese and had a crispy, golden brown exterior. The sopa de leche was amazing! I loved the flan-like texture. The empanada was very bready and had some cheese in it.

The perrereque was like a sweet, fluffy cornbread. Then, we went to a shop where they make Leon enchiladas, which they make from fried corn dough.
