Hand Vise Restoration
Hand vise are very useful for holding small objects that need to be worked by hand. By now I have quite a good selection of these in various sizes and I use some of them very often, especially when I need to file something small like one of my cast keychain.
All the hand vise I have where bought at flea markets, being common to find these are also very affordable (got this one for 3€).
Made this restoration video to show you the proces I go through to clean and fix these going for the extra mile and making this one "pretty".
You may think it's a waste of time, probably true, but it's nice to take some extra care with tools sometime just for the fun of it.
Index of operation and materials:
Electrolysis to remove rust: water and sodium carbonate solution, vise connected to negative and steel sacrificial anodes to positive of a 12V DC power supply (car battery charger). 3 hrs at 10amp.
1:46 Cleaning up the residue of the electrolysis process with steel wire brush.
2:20 Drying immediately all parts with rag and heatgun
2:50 Sintetic oil applied to all surfaces to prevent rust
4:05 Grinding back to clean metal the jaws on the 2x72 belt grinder
5:02 Hand sanding from 120 to 600 grit in preparation of polishing
5:35 Buffing on cotton wheel with fine polishing paste
6:16 Flattening jaws with files
6:54 Filing new pattern for the jaws with triangular file
Thanks a lot for watching, I hope you liked the video!
