Forged Woodturning Tool | Skew Chisel
Relatively easy blacksmithing project to experiment with forge welding high carbon steel to mild steel for tool making. A woodturning tool like this needs to be sharp just in the edge so it's a cool way to save up good high carbon steel and use some mild steel scrap I have laying around!
I just started to list some of the stuff I use for my projects in this amazon storefront:

Index of operation and materials:
0:10 Cut 30cm lenght of 15x15mm mild steel stock with metal cutting band saw
0:30 Cut a strip of sawblade (high carbon steel) with angle grinder and cut off disk
0:56 Coke forge
1:10 First part of forging: tapering and widening one end of the mild steel
2:00 Second part of forging: isolating and thinning down the tang
2:37 Grind one side of the mild steel in preparation for forge weldind
3:00 Clean up the piece of sawblade as well
3:40 Tack weld the two pieces togheter with stick welder
4:20 Borax used as flux to help forge welding
4:40 Forge welding at very high temperatures. Not many passes as the sawblade steel is thing and I risk losing it all to scales
5:31 Grind profile and bevel with 2x72 belt grinder
6:10 Heat treatment done with torches as this tool does not fit my oven
6:40 Hear the sound, hardening worked out well
6:53 Tempering to deep straw color
7:10 Remove scales with steel wire wheel on bench grinder
7:26 Re-grind the edge clean
7:38 Ferric chloride
7:46 High carbon steel on the edge is nice and dark
7:52 Grind tang round and smooth to 9mm in diameter
8:13 Buffing with fine polishing compound on cotton wheel
8:30 Random scrap wood used for handle
8:50 Only critical measure is for ferrule, checked with dividers and calipers
9:40 Drill 9mm hole for the skew tang
10:07 Ca glue finish, three passes and up to 600 grit, nice smooth and durable finish
10:45 Assembled just by friction, all is very tight, no need for glue.
11:50 Pretty damn sharp just off the buffer!
12:03 Making a simple pasta rolling pin to try out the new tool, works well! But I'm no lathe expert, or better, I'm no expert about any of this! :)
Thanks a lot for watching, I hope you liked the video!
