Explaining Counseling Confidentiality to Clients

Confidentiality is an essential aspect of counselling. It provides a safe and secure environment for clients to discuss sensitive topics knowing that their information will not be disclosed or misused outside the counselling room. Maintaining confidentiality is an ethical responsibility for counsellors and is what sets counselling apart from other relationships. However, it is important to note that confidentiality has certain limitations.

Depending on the state, situations when a clinician must break therapist-patient privilege may include:

1. Any time when the client poses an imminent danger to themselves or others where breaking therapist confidentiality would be necessary to resolve the danger
2. Any time when the therapist suspects child, elder, or dependent adult abuse
3. Any time when the client has directed the therapist to share information about their case.
4. Any time when the therapist receives a qualifying court order.
