22 June Colegiate Shag: Chaîné and A La Seconde Turns In Shag

In the first sequence the first two eight counts were just mixing up the leads at different points in the SR basic to create different looks. In the third eight count we incorporated a slightly modified a la seconde turn into shag. Obviously it's not a real a la seconde turn, but that's definitely where we stole that turn ballet and turned it into something that is fun to do as a partnership.

What makes this turn so difficult to do in standard shag is that it requires you to be comfortable working with level changes and outside of rhythms. And of course you have to have great balance as individuals, and then as a partnership your partnership balance has to be just as strong. Students from the class loved it though, and it's probably one of my all time favorite level changing shag turns because it feels like you're floating.
The second sequence was a collection of exercises designed to give the follows the opportunity to practice chaines turns in the context of the inside turn. Again, they're not quite chaines turns, but that's definitely where we stole the technique from for the girls. We help them take off, it's their job to maintain an solid turn.
