New species resembling Sesame Street character found in Great Barrier Reef | #yahoonewsau

The hairy ghost pipefish was first spotted in the early 2000s in Papua New Guinea by senior research scientist at the Port Stephens Fisheries Institute David Harasti.
In a statement, Harasti said, “I was perplexed. I photographed a few shots on my old film camera, went home, and pulled out every fish book I owned. Nothing matched. I realised we might be looking at something entirely new to science.”
Nearly two decades later, in 2020, Dr Harasti and Graham Short, a research associate at the Australian Museum and the California Academy of Sciences, launched a search in the Great Barrier Reef where they were able to locate a male and female pair, which “provided the crucial evidence needed to formally describe the species.”
Harasti said, “This discovery has been 25 years in the making. To finally confirm it as a new species is incredibly rewarding.”
Harasti and Short were so surprised by the likeness to Sesame Street’s Mr Snuffleupagus that they reached out to the company to name the creature after the iconic character.
Sesame Workshop’s senior vice president of global education, Rosemarie Truglio, Ph.D, said “We are delighted that our beloved Snuffleupagus inspired the naming of a newly discovered marine species in the real world… This charming new species is a wonderful reminder that there is still so much to explore and learn about the world.”
