Bunions (hallux valgus) are bony bumps (deformity) that form on the joint at the base of your big toe, where your big toe connects to your foot. They form when your big toe pushes against your next toe, forcing the joint of your big toe to get bigger and stick out. Skin over bunions might be red and sore. The onset of bunions is typically gradual, and complications may include bursitis or arthritis. If you can help it, you don't want to get bunions otherwise known as hallux valgus.

Today Dr. Chris (orthopaedic surgeon/sports medicine specialist/owner of integrated health centre Human 2.0) shows you some simple bunion exercises (exercises for feet and foot pain) that you can do as prevention, and as non-operative treatment options for bunions (hallux valgus) as well. Like any injury or unwanted medical condition, prevention is always the goal. And for bunions, there are simple ways to do that.

What causes bunions or hallux valgus and how do you get rid of them? Causes of bunions include wearing overly tight shoes, a family history, and rheumatoid arthritis. Diagnosis of bunions is generally based on symptoms and supported by X-rays. A similar condition of the little toe is referred to as a bunionette.

First thing to do then if you want to prevent bunions forming is to wear the proper footwear - shoes with a wide toe box so your toes can stretch out and not get cramped or pinched together, which is one of the things that can precipitate bunions from occurring. Your shoes should conform to the shape of your feet without squeezing or pressing any part of your foot.

Secondly, you should strengthen your feet by doing exercises specifically for bunions. What are some exercises for bunions on feet and is there such a thing as bunion reversal? Dr. Chris will show you and maybe, if you work at it.This will mean spending time strengthening the intrinsic muscles of the foot so that the foot as a tripod works at its best over the course of your life. As we age, all muscles tend to get weak, and so do those of the foot, which could precipitate the onset of bunions. Strengthening the foot muscles by doing balancing exercises, and specific strength training movements can go a long way to preventing bunions. Also wearing toe spacers for bunions on your feet and going barefoot as often as possible will force the muscles of the feet to work and get strong and help to prevent bunions from occurring altogether.
