As everyone knows, Karen Carpenter died from complications of the disease anorexia nervosa. I saw a documentary about her recently and learned some interesting new things. Firstly, when she died she was at a healthy weight with no liver or kidney issues. So what happened? She almost died six months before from extreme weight loss and was intubated to gain weight. Secondary, she was taking a number of prescription drugs. They included a liquid form of a drug that makes you vomit, Ativan and also a drug to speed up the thyroid gland. The vomit inducing drug weakened her heart. She never had a thyroid problem to begin with so her heart was pounding like crazy. Her heart had shrank and the demands of this thyroid drug were too much for her. She died in February, 1983 at the age of 33. Why did she feel the need to lose weight? She was bullied as a child by children calling her fat. Later as she became famous she would read nasty comments about her weight in reviews by the press. Makes ya think!!! She brought worldwide attention to a disease to which little people knew or talked about. How to describe her voice? Rich, strong, bright, sad, melancholic, God given, natural, moving, effortless, legendary and one of the best.
