Not the Bass I Came For…Hybrid Bass Everywhere!

The search for native shoal bass continues on the Chattahoochee River…but the first fish of the day is not exactly what I was hoping for.

Instead, I start the morning with a small hybrid spotted bass, the kind of fish that now dominates many stretches of the Chattahoochee. These fish are hybrids between Spotted Bass and Alabama Bass, and every individual can show a different mix of traits from the two species.

This first fish appears to lean more toward Spotted Bass ancestry.

Then, on the very next cast…another hybrid.

While these aren’t the fish I came here searching for, at least the bite is on. And these fish tell an important story about how black bass populations in the Chattahoochee Basin have changed over time.

The video ends with yet another hybrid bass, this one showing more Alabama Bass characteristics. I break down the features that point me toward that conclusion and explain some of the differences between the two parent species.

But one question still remains unanswered:

Are native shoal bass still here?
