Types of Plant Tissue Culture
The term tissue culture may be defined as the process of the in-vitro culture of explants (pieces of living differentiated tissues) in a nutrient medium under aseptic conditions. However, in general, the tissue culture includes the term tissue culture as well as cell culture, organ culture and suspension culture also.
The types of Tissue Culture are:
1. Seed Culture
2. Embryo Culture
3. Meristem Culture
4. Bud Culture
5. Protoplast Culture
6. Root tip Culture
7. Anther/ Pollen Culture
8. Complete flower Culture
9. Ovary Culture
10. Hairy Root culture
11. Callus Culture
12. Cell Suspension Culture.

1. Seed Culture:
Seeds may be cultured in vitro to generate seedlings or plants. It is the best method for raising the sterile seedling.
2. Embryo Culture:
Embryo culture is the sterile isolation and growth of an immature or mature embryo in vitro with the goal of obtaining a viable plant.
3. Meristem Culture:
The apical meristem of shoots of angiosperms and gymnosperms can be cultured to get the disease free plants.
4. Bud Culture:
Buds contain quiescent or active meristems in the leaf axils, which are capable of growing into a shoot.
5. Protoplast Culture:
It is the culture of plant protoplasts i.e., culture of cells devoid of cell wall. Isolated protoplasts are usually cultured in either liquid or semisolid agar media plates.
6. Root tip Culture:
Root is used as explants and cultured under aseptic condition to get multiple root clones
7. Anther Culture
An important aspect of plant tissue culture is the haploid production by another culture or pollen culture which was first established by Guha and Maheswari (1964, 1966) in Datura.
8. Complete flower Culture :
Flower culture can be defined as the aseptic culture of excised floral bud on a chemically defined nutrient medium where they continue their development to produce a full bloom in a culture vessel.
9. Ovary Culture
Ovary culture is the in-vitro technique which is carried outside on a suitable nutrient medium in an unpollinated flower to grow new haploid plants.
10. Hairy Root culture
Hairy roots (HRs) are differentiated cultures of transformed roots generated by the infection of wounded higher plants with Agrobacterium rhizogenes.
