Cutting the Last White Pine | History Chats

Very few things have been as important to the development of Marathon County as the white pine. From the start of logging in the 1840s, billions of board feet of pine have been cut from the great pinery along the Wisconsin River. But by the turn of the century, the number of white pine trees untouched by the lumber industry was a tiny fraction of what they once were. And eventually a claim was made that one tree was the last of its kind, the last virgin white pine--and it was cut down.

Today Gary Gisselman takes a look at this story and what happened to that "last" white pine after it was cut.
