Norwegian Elkhounds Stress Reliever – Elwha Beach Part 2
Our two-and-a-half-year-old Norwegian Elkhound, Skye, loves going to the beach! Especially Elwha Beach! Here, you have both fresh water and saltwater beaches. Dogs are allowed off leash to run and play on the sandy beach and swim in the Salish Sea, then quench their thirst and rinse off in the Elwha River! This is a perfect location for both humans and canines to beachcomb, swim, wade, dig in the soft sand and explore to the heart’s content! And as you will see in this video, Skye is in heaven here at the Mouth of the Elwha River!
Background:
Elwha Beach is located at the west side of the mouth of the Elwha River, which empties into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. This beach was formed after the dams on the Elwha River were removed in 2011 and 2014, gradually releasing many tons of sandy sediment.
There is a parking area at the Elwha Beach trailhead, with a couple of porta potties and a doggie waste station. A short path leads across a levee that contains a freshwater beaver pond and leads to the beach on the west side of the mouth of the Elwha River. When you reach the beach, you can choose to go left for a walk on the mile-long sandy beach along the Strait of Juan de Fuca or turn right for a shorter, more precarious walk along a silty, sandy, rocky, and marshy river delta where beautiful fresh river water flows from the Olympic Mountains.
