Woman Exposed While Panhandling Money For Pretend Funeral

On December 9, 2022, a deputy with the Flagler County, Florida Sheriff’s Department went to confront a woman who was panhandling money with two boys in the middle of traffic on Palm Coast Parkway. The woman and the boys were holding signs and collection buckets and wearing yellow vests. According to the signs and the suspect, they were collecting money for her niece’s funeral. Upon further questioning, the suspect told the officer that this niece lived in France and died in a car accident three days prior – which she later changed to two days prior. The officer informed the woman and her sons that they couldn’t panhandle the money in the middle of the street due to safety hazards and lack of a permit, then collected the woman’s name and birthdate. When she went to run her information, the officer found that the suspect gave her a fake name. The officer returns and spends the bulk of the interaction trying to get the woman to admit that she’s lying about everything, including her niece’s death. At one point, the officer even realizes that she’s dealt with this woman before at a different location, supposedly collecting money for a family member with a terminal illness. The suspect was simply unwilling to admit to her lies, however, and eventually ended up in handcuffs.

She was taken to the Flagler County jail and would eventually end up admitting that the funeral was a ruse. She was charged with child neglect, obstructing a highway, giving a fake name to law enforcement and scheme to defraud. Her bond was set at $16,500.
