This Mom Drove 80 MPH With Six Kids In The Car And No Seat Belts!

On 07/03/2023 at 2207 hours, Officer Roy observed a 2003 Toyota Corolla traveling at a high rate of speed (88MPH) on SR 4 near Greenlawn Road. He activated his emergency equipment and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver failed to yield and continued for approximately 1.5 miles until she pulled into the UDF gas station at 4255 SR 4. Officer Roy approached the driver, who was identified as Elisha Thompson (DOB: 01/15/1997), and noticed two children in the front seat and four children in the back seat of the vehicle, none of whom were wearing seat belts or child restraints. He also smelled a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the vehicle.

Officer Roy asked Thompson to step out of the vehicle and inquired about her alcohol consumption. She initially stated that she had one beer at a fireworks show earlier, but later admitted to having more. A check of her license revealed that it was suspended and that she had an active warrant for her arrest. Officer Roy requested backup and Deputy Young arrived on scene, followed by Sergeant Miller and Officer Flynn.

Officer Roy administered three standardized field sobriety tests to Thompson: the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN), the One Leg Stand (OLS), and the Walk and Turn (WAT). Thompson exhibited six clues of impairment on the HGN, two clues on the OLS, and four clues on the WAT. Based on these results, Officer Roy arrested Thompson for Operating a Vehicle Impaired (OVI) and placed her in his cruiser. He then searched and impounded her vehicle and transported her to the Fairfield Township Police Department for processing.

At the police department, Officer Roy read Thompson the BMV 2255 form in the presence of Sergeant Miller, who witnessed the reading. Thompson refused to provide a breath sample for chemical testing. She was then photographed and fingerprinted and taken to the Butler County Jail for booking. She was charged with OVI, Speeding, Driving Under Suspension, Failure to Wear a Seat Belt, and six counts of Endangering Children. She was issued citations for the traffic offenses and a summons for the criminal offenses.
