Who Is Derrick James? | New Trainer Anthony Joshua

Since the beginning of his career, Anthony Joshua has been showered with unending praise. Joshua (24-3, 22 KOs) has been the heavyweight division's poster boy for a variety of reasons, including his massive frame and his ability to knock out his opponents. Despite all the acclaim, Andy Ruiz Jr. showed a few vulnerabilities.

In the United States, Joshua went for the knockout on June 1, 2019. Joshua's U.S. debut would be ruined by Ruiz, who would knock him down three times before stopping him in the seventh round. Although Oleksandr Usyk would rectify the situation in their upcoming rematch, he showed even more of his flaws.

Since Joshua has lost twice to the Ukrainian, he has been criticized for what many have called a lackluster performance. Now Joshua has enlisted the help of Derrick James, a trainer with a stellar reputation, in an effort to get back to the winning column.

Many have speculated that on April 1, Joshua will face Jermaine Franklin in his first assignment, but that James will urge him to increase his aggression and demonstrate not only a willingness to bang it out but also a dog-like mentality.

James, on the other hand, doesn't understand why Joshua's detractors keep urging him to stand and bang. Being a bull in a China shop, in his opinion, doesn't always yield the best results.

"He just has to be the best version of himself," James said in a recent interview with Seconds Out. Not every dog is smart, so it might not be a dog. A dog would certainly defend its territory from a bear. Even though he knows he can't win, he's going to try and fight a bear anyway.

Errol Spence Jr., the undisputed welterweight champion, and Jermell Charlo, the undisputed junior middleweight kingpin, are two of the biggest names in boxing currently in James' stable.

Both champions have an aggressive demeanor. James, however, has played a role in shaping them over time. The outcomes, as expected, have been nothing short of spectacular. James intends to emulate Joshua in many ways. James acknowledges that Joshua possesses a great deal of natural talent, but he thinks that the combination of Joshua's physical prowess and his sharp mind could lead to further success.

To achieve success, one must be intelligent, smart, and selective in their approach.
When he fights Jermaine Franklin this spring, British heavyweight Anthony Joshua will be looking to get back to winning ways.

Joshua will enter the main event having lost two in a row, both times to Oleksandr Usyk via unanimous decision in 2021 and again in August of this year.

After losing to Usyk in their first fight, Joshua, 33, gave up his unified heavyweight titles, which Usyk, unbeaten at the time, successfully defended in their rematch.

Now that he has defeated Alvarez, Joshua plans to train for a world title fight against Franklin.

Everything you need to know about Joshua's most important fight to date is right here.

Jermaine Franklin...who is he really?
Franklin, a heavyweight from the United States, is 29 years old and was undefeated until his most recent fight, a loss by decision to Dillian Whyte. Franklin entered that November bout at London's Wembley Arena with a professional record of 21-0, 14 of which were via knockout.

Joshua, who has a record of 24-3, was a spectator for the Franklin vs. Whyte fight. Twenty-two of Joshua's victories have been knockouts.

Derrick James will guide Anthony Joshua moving forward.

Anthony Joshua returns to the ring on April 1 when he faces Jermaine Franklin, exclusively live on DAZN, as he begins his quest to regain the world heavyweight title.

Joshua will have Derrick James in his corner for the first time and the Texas based coach is enjoying his new role as the 2012 Olympic gold medallist's trainer.

With Franklin the immediate priority for both Joshua and Franklin, the opportunity to secure bigger fights moving can only be achieved with Joshua gaining victory.

Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury, long-time rivals of Joshua, are likely to be mentioned at some point this year and James has had his say on the pair when speaking on The DAZN Boxing Show.

“I think both them bring two different dynamics,” said James when speaking to Ak and Barak.

“Wilder brings a lot of power. He’s quick and he’s an athlete also. Fury brings a different skillset. I think they both bring different elements of boxing for Anthony Joshua.”
