Final Prep for Kevlar Skid Plates | Sanding, Acetone & Flame Treatment (Part 4)

This is where prep work gets real—and a little nerve-wracking.

In Part 4 of this step-by-step Kevlar skid plate series, we finish preparing the hull and move into one of the most misunderstood steps in the process.

In this video:

Finishing the sanding process for proper adhesion
Why every surface area must be roughed up (even smooth sections)
Cleaning the hull with acetone before installation
Using a propane torch to “blush” the plastic surface

The flame treatment step isn’t about heating or melting your boat—it’s about subtly altering the surface so the epoxy bonds properly. It’s often described as more of an art than a science, and it’s definitely the step that makes most people nervous.

There are some excellent detailed videos out there showing exactly how to do this safely—I highly recommend watching a few before attempting it yourself.

🎣 Up next: we move into applying the resin and bringing the skid plate to life.
