In comparing Cortots recording of this Liszt Legend with that of Perlemuter, Frederick Gaussin writes, "Perlemuter is less grandiloquent and less theatrical; he is in fact more pensive than Cortot , who interprets it as through a Wagnerian prism that distorts the true message of this mystical fresco." (This was Perlemuters first recording-- March, 1939)
I find both to be riveting performances.
