VICENZA: GHOSTS OF HEROES

Vicenza was founded by the Romans in a fluvial valley between the Berici Hills to the south and the Vicentine Alps to the north. The local Germanic tribe of the Cimbri were defeated by the Romans in the 2nd century BCE and have managed to live in relative isolation in the Vicentine hills and mountains to this day. In the 16th century, Vicenza was the home of the world-renowned architect Andrea Palladio. In 1918, Ernest Hemingway and other American poets worked as ambulance drivers in the town of Bassano, about 30 km north of Vicenza proper. The city and its environs are said to be haunted by the ghosts of ancient heroes. Throughout history, the Vicentine mountains have seen countless battles in which thousands of warriors and soldiers lost their lives fighting for their ideals.
