Can Corn Fuel the Future? Chapter 1 - All about Nebraska Corn!
http://www.nebraskacorn.org/
Can corn help fuel the future? The answer is YES!
Corn can fuel many different things! It can make ethanol that fuels your car, feed that fuels the diets of livestock, and can be used to fuel the development of new products made from corn.... the possibilities for the future are endless!
Corn in Nebraska is famous! We are the Cornhusker State after all!
We are the third largest corn producing state in the United States, and the second largest ethanol producing state. We're also the second largest cattle-on-feed state. Corn and agriculture are really important for Nebraska!
In the last ten years, farmers in Nebraska have increased the amount of corn they grow more than 40 percent! That's because Nebraska farmers are Sustaining Innovation -- growing more corn with less fertilizer, less chemicals, less water, less land and having less of an impact on the environment.
It's amazing!
However, we don't keep all the corn grown in Nebraska or even the United States. Many countries around the world enjoy the high-quality corn we grow, so they buy it and we ship it to them.
Since farmers are so good at growing corn, some really smart people have figured out new ways to use it. Of course corn is a great feed source for livestock and poultry. But today we can also feed livestock something made from corn, a feed called distillers grain that is made from corn by ethanol plants. We'll learn about this process in Chapter 9.
But corn has dozens of uses in foods. It can be found in over 3,000 items in the grocery store! Corn starch, corn sugar, cereals ... they're all made from corn. Some products are even packaged in corn-based plastic containers. Pretty much anything made of plastic today can be made from corn plastic!
From one bushel of corn 2.8 gallons of ethanol can be made and 17 pounds of distillers grains.
