The spine is made of vertebrae stacked upon each other in a neutral alignment. The vertebrae are separated by an intervertebral disc. The intervertebral discs are made up of the outer annulus and the inner nucleus. The discs have a specific role, the first being providing cushioning and preventing friction between the vertebrae during movement. Also, they help give the spine the needed structure and enable flexible movement.

Degenerative disc disease is when there is either a disc, multiple disc, or multiple sections of the spine that are deteriorating or degenerating, leading to or causing specific symptoms. The symptoms can be case-specific and based on different factors, including how bad it is, the degree of nerve involvement, and what area of the spine it is affecting.

Symptoms can include back pain, radicular pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness in the affected area.

Some of the most common causes of disc disease are generally going to be misalignment. Some type of misalignment occurred years ago and left untreated and uncorrected. This small misalignment causes the affected area to degenerate faster than the rest of the spine.

These days, however, repetitive injuries are more common than traumatic injuries. If they occur together, however, the patient's spine is more difficult to treat. Chronic lifestyle choices also affect the spine by causing disc dissection.

The more damaged and degenerated the spine, the harder it is to restore. The main thing is that you need to address the underlying cause, which commonly is the alignment of the vertebra relative to the discs. Until normal alignment is restored, it will be difficult to restore normal disc function because the discs are responding to the alignment of the spine.
At the Scoliosis Reduction Center, we offer proactive treatment that can help restore normal disc health and normal disc function, but most importantly, it will help prevent further damage by realigning the spine and taking pressure off the disc to help preserve the spine.
