We often see patients with a family history of scoliosis. Many times, these patients come to me with concerns about prevention. Is there a way to prevent their child or grandchild from developing scoliosis? This is a common question among parents and caregivers who fear that scoliosis may have a genetic component. While there is some evidence of a familial tendency in scoliosis, it's crucial to note that there isn't a clear genetic cause. Studies on identical twins have shown that while some twins may both have scoliosis, others do not share the condition. This suggests that genetics alone cannot be blamed for scoliosis.
In our society, prevention must be approached by understanding scoliosis and controlling its progression. Scoliosis is a progressive condition, starting with small curves that tend to worsen over time, progressing from mild to moderate to severe and very severe. Catching scoliosis when it's still small allows us to have a greater impact on how the curve develops and how it affects the individual.
Even within families, some members may have severe scoliosis, while others do not. Understanding scoliosis differently and providing treatment for those who develop scoliosis can prevent curves from progressing to a severe stage, even if there's a genetic predisposition. However, proactive treatment is essential.
When it comes to scoliosis, the most common type is idiopathic scoliosis, accounting for about 80% of cases. Idiopathic scoliosis is characterized by an unknown cause and is considered multifactorial. The remaining 20% of cases are associated with specific causes such as neuromuscular conditions, congenital scoliosis, degenerative scoliosis, or traumatic scoliosis. In many cases, the exact cause remains unknown.
While it may be disheartening to hear, scoliosis cannot be completely prevented, primarily because we often don't understand the exact cause of the condition. However, we can influence the progression of scoliosis, especially through early intervention. Early detection and intervention significantly increase the chances of treatment success.
Preventing scoliosis should be focused on preventing the progression of existing curves. By addressing scoliosis on a structural level as soon as it's detected, we can make the curves smaller and less impactful. Various forms of chiropractic care, physical therapy, customized home exercises, and specific scoliosis therapy can effectively treat scoliosis and mitigate its progression.
While we may not always understand why scoliosis develops in individual cases, we can prevent its progression by treating it proactively and on a structural level. At the Scoliosis Reduction Center, we offer proactive scoliosis treatment that can significantly reduce the impact of scoliosis on an individual's life.
