Your garden is ready for winter all winter, in milder climates Charles Dowding
Make your garden winter ready - a common phrase, but do you need to? Maybe yes for cold climates, but…
In milder climates say above -8C 18F by night, we have an option to keep cropping, just small leaves but of great value when fresh food is scarce. There could be kale, savoy cabbage, leek, spinach, parsnip, and Brussels sprouts.
Do keep weeding if the weather is mild. Maybe use cardboard on weeds, but only if they are thick, otherwise hand weed.
It's best to remove old plants after last harvests, rather than leaving them for slugs and snails!
Add compost even if imperfect, rather than hay or straw. Compost feeds and protects soil life without increasing slugs. Spread a little woodchip on paths.
