Today we are continuing with our series where we review Citizenship by Investment Programs. It's Malta's turn today.
This is the most expensive Citizenship by Investment program on the market! This is also one of the most attractive passports you can buy.
Maltese citizens have visa-free or visa on arrival access to 182 countries and territories (including Canada, USA, Australia and New Zealand), ranking the Maltese passport 9th in the world according to the Henley Passport Index. Every Maltese citizen is also a citizen of the European Union and a Commonwealth citizen. The passport, along with the national identity card, allows for free rights of movement and residence in all member states of the European Economic Area, as well as Switzerland.
In simple words, Malta offers a fantastic passport! However, it doesn't come cheaply.
In order to obtain a Maltese passport, you will need to make a massive donation.
You will need to donate 750 000 Euros if you want to get it faster, or 600 000 Euros if you want to get the passport after 3 years.
Even if you donate the higher amount you will need to wait at least a year to 18 months in order to be granted citizenship.
In order to qualify you will need to either purchase property or rent for 6 years.
On top of this there are MANY more fees that you'll need to pay: another government donation of 10 000 euros, government fees of 15 000 euros, residency permit that will cost you 5000 euros, document fees of 1500 euros, etc etc.
By the time you're done, you'll be in for over 850 000 euros without the cost of accommodation! It's also important to keep in mind that you will not get your passport instantly, but will wait for more than a year!
That's why we don't think this is such a great option, especially since there are other unofficial programs in the EU that will cost less and grant a passport much much faster. The biggest competitor at the moment is certainly Hungary.
Who are we and what do we do?
We are Offshore Citizen team. We help people become global: get a second passport, set up a second residency, pay less taxes, do banking abroad, etc.
