110514 MONTGOMERY COUNTY DEPUTIES INJURED IN I-45 CRASH

Just after 6 am Wednesday morning two Montgomery County deputies were heading to the Sheriff’s Office on the north side of Conroe to pick up a vehicle before heading to their patrol area in East Montgomery County. As they approached the overpass between FM 2854 and SH 105 they spotted a vehicle broken down in the moving lane of traffic. The deputies pulled up behind the vehicle and both got out to assist the motorist who at that point was able to get their vehicle back in motion. As the deputies walked back to their vehicle a Jeep which was also northbound at approximately 70 miles per hour changed lanes into the lane the marked patrol unit with overhead lights activated , was in. The 50-year-old driver hit his brakes and swerved to the right to attempt to avoid a collision with the patrol car. He clipped the right rear of the patrol car with the left front fender of the Jeep. Now at at 63 miles per hour according to the Black Box information on the vehicle. THat is when one of the deputies saw the Jeep coming at them. He then attempted to push his SGT. out of the way when he was struck by the Jeep. When he was hit the deputy remained on the hood for close to one hundred fifty yards before being ejected onto the freeway. The Sgt. was also struck but was more of a glancing blow due to being pushed out of the way.

Due to weather conditions Wednesday morning Life Flight or PHI Air Medical were able to fly. MCHD transported the deputy to the Conroe Regional Trauma Center in very critical condition. THe Sgt was also transported in stable condition.

As of last report the deputy remains in surgery with is condition upgraded to serious. Along with two broken legs and internal injuries, he also suffered a head and back injury.

The driver of the Jeep was taken to Conroe Regional hospital for a mandatory blood draw which was requested by the District Attorney’s Office. That draw was reported to be negative for drugs and alcohol. DPS and the District Attorney’s Office both assisted Conroe Police in the investigation which had the freeway closed northbound until almost noon.

Both deputies are well seasoned with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and have been serving the residents of East Montgomery County for many years.
