YouTube Play Button Jigsaw Puzzle. A Scroll Saw project for the Small Workshop Makers Challenge 2018

This is my entry for the Small Makers Challenge. (CC available) Expand this description for more information. The remit was to create a project that features the YouTube button. You could make anything you want, however you want, using whatever you want. I just had to be in on this one.

When taking up the challenge I wanted to do something a little unusual. Very difficult because nearly everything has been done before and posted on YouTube. My scroll saw had been collecting dust for months so this project was a good excuse to set it up and clean it off. Time was tight so I knew this was not going to be a sophisticated build but still an enjoyable project. Not just for me but for the youngsters who will enjoy playing with this puzzle.

When I printed the outline of the button to make the template I overlaid a feint puzzle pattern which acted as a guide to drawing out the pieces to fit the button shape. I used a pattern with non uniform shaped pieces so any slip or waver off the line when cutting would not stand out too much.

I used 2mm MDF rather than plywood as I didn't want the grain of the wood to be used as a clue to the orientation of the pieces. Also, to add a little more complexity to this 25 piece puzzle, both sides were painted to it is impossible to determine which way up the pieces should be. The blade of choice was a No2. Although it's a fine blade (to give the smallest kerf between the pieces) it performed without any problems on such a thin and easily cut material.

The paint used was Cadmium Red and Titanium White non toxic heavy body artists acrylic so should little ones decide to chew the pieces it will not be detrimental to their health. I know MDF is not an ideal material but it does not taste very nice if put into the mouth. Don't ask me how I know this!

To keep the pieces safe when stored I folded an origami box from stiff card after running the pieces through a printer to adorn the lid with the YouTube logo. An extra puzzle piece was cut and glued to the lid. If you want to make this box there is a link to detailed instructions in the description above.
