The body will be turned from a 150 x 25mm Oak blank.I have a couple of metres of two core cable, an in line switch, plug and a 3 amp fuse to replace the 13 amp that comes as standard with the plug. The switch is double pole so the unit is completely isolated from the power when switched off.

I'm using a microwave turntable motor with a rotational speed of 5 to 6 RPM. I bought this one from flea bay for just a few pounds. It came with a spindle hub which will also be used in the project'

After finding the centre, I drill an 8mm hole in the blank, mount it on a screw chuck and start by truing up the Oak on the lathe. I want the face flat with a curve on the top edge and a subtle shape on the edge.

I sand down to 240 grit, spray with sanding sealer and work down to a fine surface with Yorkshire Grit. I flip the blank round in the bowl jaws and hog out most of the centre to accommodate the motor and wiring. A slow job as the maximum RPM allowed with these jaws is 600. Flipping the wood round again the centre hole is enlarged to suit the drive hub and everything is finished with Wood Wax 22.

From 2mm MDF a circular cover plate is cut on the lathe to fit the bottom after which I start on the wiring. I fit the double pole switch and the plug before soldering the wires on to the motor terminals. These joints are completely covered with heat shrink insulation for protection.

Because there was not enough thickness left in the wood to accommodate screws I secured the motor and wiring in place with lashings of hot glue. Once the cover is glued on the unit is effectively double insulated so, as there is no metalwork exposed, no earth is needed.

I'm really pleased with the turntable, it's going to get a lot of use.
