Four Clever Workshop Hacks - Space Saving tricks to my 8x6ft Woodworking and Woodturning Shop

#8x6workshop #woodwork #shophacks Two years since the inception of the 8x6 workshop I'm now enhancing extraction, lighting and work area' These upgrades increase the efficiency of workflow in my small workshop. Expand for more details...

Lathe Extraction System
The previous mailable aluminium ducting was always difficult to position close to the work to ensure the maximum dust collection possible. With this improved design I can manoeuvre the hose exactly where I need it and it stays put. Hopefully only dust - and an odd shaving or two - will be travelling down the pipework to the collector so I used rectangular kitchen hood duct and tumble dryer hose which is much more flexible than the conventional 4” workshop extraction hose. As the system is more compact I can leave it in place when not in use in it's collapsed state against the wall so I no longer need to find a storage space elsewhere in the workshop for it. To preserve the condition of the hose at the extractor end a receiving ring has been installed to stow it out of the way and off the floor when not needed. Even though I had to purchase everything save for the home made plywood parts the total build was less than £25

Fold Away Lighting
I have two of these larger than average angle poise lamps in my studio so I already knew installing one in the workshop would be an invaluable asset so long as I was able to collapse it completely out of the way when not needed. The light is 6400k giving a natural white light, invaluable when working with colours.

Work Area
No matter what size of workshop you have you always seem to crave more clear workspace. Whenever I am woodworking or project making which does not require the lathe, that area is wasted space. Or it was. The lathes tail stock and tool rest stow away behind the lathe and out of the way allowing for a fitted board to be attached securely to the lathe bed giving me another 20% of clear temporary work space. In a workshop of only 48 square feet that's a lot of space! The remit for this project was to be able to store the work surface adequately when not needed without compromising the existing space. A perfect spot with easy access was found under the band saw.

Belt Sander Hood
The hood is kept lightweight by utilising 3mm Baltic Birch plywood. Internal seems and joints are reinforced with 5mm square bead and the whole assembly is glued together. In order to ensure the maximum catchment of dust the hood does have to be removed to change the belt but it is a small price to pay for having much cleaner air in the workshop. The 4 inch outlet matches my existing extraction system and I have even adapted the disc outlet to 4 inch also, cutting down on the faffing about time when swapping hoses.

Thanks so much for watching. Do subscribe, like, comment and enjoy.
