ERICH WOLFGANG KORNGOLD - Mildred's Jealousy (Of Human Bondage)

One of the most interesting cues from Korngold's rich, dramatic score to the 1944 film version of Maugham's OF HUMAN BONDAGE. This is the scene where Mildred (Eleanor Parker) is so overwhelmed with jealousy and hatred, she completely wrecks the apartment of Philip (Paul Henreid), the disabled man obsessed with her. Korngold's spiky, frenetic music perfectly captures her warped personaity. The scene then changes (with a beautiful gear change in the music) to a busy street below, as he returns.

This, the second screen version of the story (the first and best, starred Bette Davis) was not released until 1946 after much re-editing and many cuts. It was a failure and its only redeeming feature now is Korngold's magnificent score, which still awaits a modern recording.
