Building An Alaskan Log Cabin - Week 6

I am finally to the top of these gable-end walls. Cutting the rakes to pitch is a slow process. It is high up in the air and it involves two different saws to accomplish well.

I am now ready to start closing in the roof and I think you will enjoy the process. At this latitude the balance between the proper amounts of insulation and ventilation are extremely important in order for the roof to perform well. I will cover the portion of the roof inside the walls, with plywood and a waterproof membrane. The membrane will shed any blowing snow or condensation that may occur. Then I will build a second layer above the membrane The second layer creates the ventilation space, and will eventually be covered with sheetmetal.

I do not want to see any plywood roof sheeting from outside when I walk around the cabin. I want the rustic look of rough-sawn planks and sheet metal roofing when I look up at my soffits. That is all you will see when I am done. I have built several hundred of these roofs over the past 35 years and have a definite idea in mind of what I want the roof lines to look like on this cabin.

We had two hard rains this week so I have temporarily covered the rafters with a tarp to prevent any water damage to the inside. Next week we are supposed to have some nice sunny weather though!

I appreciate all you wonderful folk keeping me company through this build. It has been tremendously enjoyable for me to film these project and share it with you each week.

Greetings from Alaska my friends!
