FRIENDS WITHIN THE DARKNESS

Bukowski's work expressed his chronic dissatisfaction with life. As a young man, he left Los Angeles for New York City to begin a career as a financially pinched blue-collar worker with dreams of becoming a writer, and summarized his experience in the poem "Friends within the Darkness". After a brief stint at a pickle factory in Los Angeles, he held a job at the Los Angeles Post Office Department. At the age of 49, Bukowski finally accepted an offer from Black Sparrow Press publisher John Martin and quit his post office job to dedicate himself to full-time writing.
