Building Segmented Tornado Eggs or Balls for woodturning

This is a series of photos of tornado eggs. I show how I glue up the segments and then resaw the rings from around an inch to about 3/32 of an inch. I then stagger the joints to create the effect.
I made the baltic birch resaw sled which adjust side ways to allow me to get any thickness I want. It cuts so smooth I do not need to sand the disk before glueing. I use a 14 tooth blade.
There is far more cutting and gluing than turning for this type of a project.
I also use a wedgie sled to cut the segments. This is also made from baltic birch plywood. As long as your wedges are made correctly you can glue all the segments at once. These segments are cut to make 18 segments per ring.
I will have a video soon of cutting and gluing segments to make a bowl that I machine a raised carving on.
I hope you enjoy the slide show.
