USS The Sullivans: Why did we flood the Transom?

We take you, the viewer, to the transom of USS The Sullivans, our Fletcher Class Destroyer here at the Buffalo Naval Park. Back in 2002, the propellers were removed so DD537 could be moved and nested in her current position. To counteract the lost weight, holes were intentionally drilled into the transom to create the ballast needed to keep her stern down!

It's been almost 20 years and our staff needs to keep an eye on the transom to make sure the baffles and lightening bulkheads are secure and more importantly aren't degrading. These are tight spaces, but we take the camera down to to the 2nd platform and have a peek around. This coming season we're going to have to have a staff person climb down there to put eyes on all these spaces!

Thanks as always for your support!
