Warriors Ball Movement - 15/16
The Golden State Warriors hold the greatest regular season record in NBA history at 73-9. Having won the NBA Finals the season prior, the began at home, with a ring ceremony. They would go on to reel off 24 straight wins (the best start in NBA history) before losing their first game. They broke A LOT of records, but likely the most telling numbers (on the offensive end, at least) were that they had the highest offensive efficiency rating in the league (112.5, with OKC finishing at 109.9), and lead the league with 28.9 team assists per game.
Andrew Bogut talked about how Kerr’s first training camp had the Warriors doing the most basic passing drills you could imagine. A fundamentally sound base for a team turned the ball over too much was exactly what was needed. It was the next step in their evolution. Consider that most of these plays are passes hitting guys in the chest, going from good to great in terms of shot quality, and reading the defense properly. Sometimes, the Dubs try to force a pass, and waste possession, but considering that they were just barely (1.95 vs SA’s 1.96) second to the Spurs in terms of assist to turnover ratio as an entire team, I’d say they convert more than they don’t.
The Warriors culture and philosophy is laid out for the entire world to see: “STRENGTH IN NUMBERS.” Through Steve Kerr’s entire coaching career thus far, the Warriors are an absurd 140-24*, and they’re doing it, very much, using their strength in numbers.
*Off the top of my head, that’s second to only the Bulls 141-23 record from the 95-96, 96-97 seasons as the all-time greatest consecutive seasons win total.
