If you’re looking for a hip and unique pair of sunglasses, look no further than the SPY Hotspot. These are some sweet new frames that SPY has launched that combine style and UV Protection. The merlot lens is a perfect cloudy day lens, but if you’re looking for a sunny day lens, SPY offers these sunglasses in a few different frame and lens colors.
Most importantly, these lenses offer 100% UV Protection so they will protect your eyes from damaging UV rays. These lenses are also ARC (Accurate Radius Curvature) polycarbonate lenses which means they are designed to follow the natural curvature of your eye. This is beneficial for a couple of reasons like helping to reduce strain on your eyes as well as keeping your view clear of distortion. If you’re like me and you have to wear sunglasses outside, the merlot lenses will likely be a little bit light for you for a bright sunny day. I do really like these for cloudy, low-light days because I don’t need a super dark lens and I’m still maintaining UV protection for my eyes.
The Hotspots are built with bioplastic which means they’re made up of 50% plant matter! It’s pretty cool what they’re doing these days with bioplastic and it’s awesome that SPY is incorporating this into their frames. These frames are lightweight and durable but do not feel “cheap.” As you can see in the video, they withstand some flex.
These are definitely a fashion statement and they have a 70s/80s feel to them. I wouldn’t say I’m the most stylish person around, so these definitely make me feel like I have a cool factor when I’m wearing them. I’d say if you’re looking for a low-light, stylish option for sunglasses you will love the merlot lens. If you’re looking for everyday bright sun protection, check out the grey polar lens option. Also, be sure to check out our other SPY reviews including sunglasses that feature the Happy Lens and Happy Boost Lens.
