If there was some sort of winter Snowmageddon coming and I could only grab one jacket, I think it’d have to be the Eliot Gore-Tex 3L Jacket by Dakine. The Eliot Jacket is durable and tough, entirely waterproof and weatherproof yet still lightweight and breathable. It includes every feature you’d want in a pow jacket and then some.
The Gore-Tex guarantee proves that no matter how deep or wet the snow is, you’ll stay dry all day long. The Gore-Tex combined with fully taped seams means that snow is going to struggle to get to your core. One of the huge benefits of Gore-Tex is that while it’s insanely waterproof, it’s also breathable so it won’t feel like you’re wearing a trash bag. When I’m in the backcountry this jacket excels in that it helps regulate my body temp because of the breathability.
Dakine has a very consistent fit scale that they stick to which makes finding the right fit easy. I’m 6’0 tall and 200 pounds and the large fits me really well. The Eliot Jacket is a Long & Trim fit. I think if I weighed much more than 200lbs, I would probably want to size up one size. I do love the length of the Eliot Jacket and the split hem in the back ensures a full range of movement and no restriction. This is key for me as a tele-skier.
All the pockets on the Eliot Jacket are placed perfectly and totally useable. The two hand pockets are zipper closures and under the storm flap there are two hidden pockets. One’s a perfect place for valuables like a credit card that you can access without unzipping your jack. The upper chest pocket is a media pocket. It’s really nice that the media pocket is accessible without unzipping your jacket so you can access your tunes even in the gnar. Of course, the pass-through headphone slot is key. There’s also a pass pocket on the sleeve.
I really like the huge hood on the Eliot Jacket but in order for a huge hood to be usable, it has to be adjustable. This hood has three points of adjustment and so I never feel like the hood is falling into my eyes. It fits easily over my ski helmet too. The inner pow skirt is another added bonus and the fact that it is removable is super beneficial to me.
If you’re looking for the ultimate storm jacket, look no further. The Eliot Gore-Tex 3L Jacket by Dakine will protect you from any elements you find yourself in and will continue to do so for many seasons down the road. The Eliot Jacket is durable yet it doesn’t feel stiff; it fits nicely and is backed by the Gore-Tex guarantee.
