In the tiny town of Mullewa, a giant dish is rising from the red dirt.

Without ground stations like this, spacecraft can’t be controlled, astronauts can’t communicate with NASA, and data from space can’t make it back to Earth.

And with NASA’s Artemis missions pushing further around the Moon, the need for reliable Earth communication is becoming more urgent than ever.

Strategic Advisor and Co-Founder of Starsite, Angela Teale, is helping lead the effort to build a 20-metre “parabolic dish” designed to communicate with spacecraft orbiting and landing on the Moon in upcoming missions.

Speaking to Yahoo News Australia, Teale said, “It’s about telling a satellite what to do from the ground, and then receiving the data back from the satellite to the ground.”

Teale went on to explain why the remote Western Australian town is the ideal place for the project - the region offers strong power infrastructure, high-capacity fibre connections, and critically, very low radio frequency interference.

She added, “The characteristics of the area really lend themselves to being great for space. Since there’s not a lot out there, that lends well to something that’s listening really hard for signals that are deep in space.”
