Teen Prisoner to Soldier: From Street Gangs to the Military - Remembering John

Elsewhere on this channel viewers have seen videos of a Military Unit inside Pendleton Juvenile Prison in Indiana, and some of the young men who were serving time in the unit during the time we filmed inside. Called the Future Soldiers Program, the unit had its own cellblock in the prison and the young men who were accepted into the program wore military fatigues instead of orange jumpsuits. The unit was structured like a military boot camp, with teens adhering to a rigorous schedule day and night. One of the teens featured in our previous videos was teenager John Madden. John arrived in prison with extreme anger issues and a loose affiliation with a street gang. During our time following him, he was the "star" of the Future Soldier Program and a leader on the unit. After several years behind bars, John completed the program and took the military ASFAB test hoping to leave prison and enter the Army. In this video, we look back at John's time in juvenile prison, the friendships he made and the success he had once he finally found structure and stability. An update on what happened to John following his release is included at the end of this video.
