From Prison Kids to Public Speakers: The Inspiring Story of Miles & Colt (Encore Presentation)

Over a decade ago we met Miles Folsom and Colt Lundy during their first year in prison. Colt was 15 years old at the time and serving a 30 year sentence. Miles was 17 when we met him and was sentenced to 36 years behind bars at age 16. Miles and Colt were first featured in the Calamari Productions documentary film, When Young Kids Do Hard Time. Following the show, we continued to keep in touch with both boys, following their lives and their stories inside prison for nearly a decade. We continue to follow them today.
In 2019, Colt was finally successful in gaining a sentence modification and released from prison after 9 years behind bars. In December, 2020, after many years of court battles, Miles also was granted a sentence modification and released to Work Release after 12 years behind bars. During their time in prison, Miles and Colt did an extraordinary job of focusing their minds on their eventual release someday, gaining their education behind bars, mentoring other youth who wound up in adult prison like they had, and staying away from the perils of prison that too often prevent others from finding life outside prison walls. Upon release from prison, both young men immediately started full time jobs and began to focus on their personal and professional goals -- goals they formed during their time incarcerated. This included advocating for more humane practices for youth behind bars, and sentencing reform for juveniles in the system -- specifically, ending the practice of waiving children to adult court.
We are now honored to present the video of Miles and Colt giving their keynote speech in August, 2021 at the Council of Juvenile Justice Administrators (CJJA) conference in Nashville, TN. The speech marked the first time Miles and Colt gave a public address about their experiences in prison, and what they hoped the audience of correctional officials would take away from the speech to better help youth in their respective states and juvenile facilities. Finally, many of you on our channel might recognize CJJA's Executive Director, Mike Dempsey, who introduced Miles and Colt during their speech. Mike was previously a juvenile prison superintendent featured in several of our videos. As the head of CJJA, he continues to advocate for juveniles who become ensnared in the criminal justice system. If anyone would like to reach out to Miles and Colt to present at their own events or classrooms, please contact them at: investedyouth501@gmail.com ~
