male mandrill with impressive canines - mandrill mâle aux canines impressionnantes

Our mirror number 6 is mounted under hazeltree (coula edulis). It takes its local name from the fact that its fruits look like European hazelnuts in shape and taste . However they are 4 to 5 times larger. Many animals such as duikers, giant rats, red river hogs eat it after having broken the shell between their teeth or swallow it as elephants do.
Hence the strategic position of this Mirror
These exaggerated yawns are intended to intimidate an intruder by presenting impressive canines. This male, not knowing the properties of the mirror, does not know what it looks like. It sees in its reflection in an intruder it has never seen in the group hence its behavior. Canines dominant males are very sharp and very long (4-5 cm). Within mandrills groups of up to several hundred individuals, fighting between males result in deep lacerations.
To overcome zoos multimale group or research centers with many individuals as CIRMF Franceville in Gabon, the canines of some dominant males are sometimes reduced by pulpectomy. Read the communication on this medical intervention to disarm several males O. Bourry / Rouquet P. and B. Salle at Primate Center, International Medical Research Centre of Franceville in Gabon.
