Shenandoah - Hiking Old Rag

Old Rag in Shenandoah National Park is quite simply one of the coolest adventure hikes on the East Coast!
This route winds through the Virgina hardwood forest, before emerging onto a rocky ridgeline on which hikers navigate a rugged trail through house-sized boulders as the blue-blazed route leads to the summit.
Summit views showcase the Blue Ridge Mountains of Shenandoah National Park.

The Hike can be done via two routes:

The most popular route is straight up Old Rag Ridge which is about a 3 mile hike one-way on trail, with a bit of rock scrambling on the final mile along the summit ridge. Many hikers opt to connect this to the Saddle Trail & exit on the Weakley Hollow Fire Road, which leads back to the parking area, 5.2 miles below. The total distance will end up being around 9-10 miles on this route.

The other option is to hike up the Weakley Hollow Fire Road to the junction with the Saddle Trail, & access the summit without the rock scrambling. It is 5.2 miles from lot to summit, so it should be 10.4 miles roundtrip.
