Olympic National Park - Hiking in Olympic

Let's be clear, Washington state has some epic national parks. While it's hard for me to pick a favorite among them, there is no doubt that I list Olympic National Park in my top 5 of all the national parks, and when I get the opportunity to go hiking in Olympic, I always jump at the chance.

Olympic has more diversity than many other parks combined. There are three main ecosystems in the park, and you'll want to explore each of them. From the rugged high alpine environment with jagged peaks and ancient glaciers, to the lush green rainforests of the western slopes, to the magical sea stacks of the foggy Pacific Coast, this park is a dream.

This is a large national park, and it takes substantial time to get around here, as only one road circles the park, and it is slow going at times. That's all right, just take the road less traveled and abandon the car and head out on any of the park's winding trails. There are hiking trails here that can suit anyone, but some of the more rugged trails provide access to scenes that are simply unforgettable.

Some of my favorites are along the park's 73 miles of Pacific Coastline, where otherworldly scenes are the norm. Strolls through the Hoh Rainforest take visitors back in time to when this was home to the largest temperate rainforest on the planet. And journeys into the high country offer an opportunity to test one's strength on trails that just seem to go up, & up & up & up... Oh yeah, and then it rains on you... Love it!
