Why DEVO is the Greatest Punk Band Of All Time! Pop Culture Graveyard, Ep 21, Best Punk Band Ever!

Devo is the greatest punk band of all time. There, I said it. I know this is subjective, but the older I get the more I appreciate their FU attitude and DIY aesthetic. That's why Devo will ALWAYS be my pick for best punk band of all time. Do you have a pick for the best punk band ever? Come on, vinyl community! Let me know in the comments. Me...? I'm sticking with Devo!

Mark recently battled serious health issues, and it inspired me to do an episode about the beloved Devo of my childhood. I'm overjoyed that Mark has since made a full recovery and will be creating more fantastic music for years to come. There's lots more info below on all the Devo albums, but to me Devo will always mean their "classic-five" line-up of Mark, Jerry, Bob1, Bob 2 and Alan. Long live Devo!

Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo - This debut LP by the boys from Akron was wholly unlike anything else on the scene at its time of release, as befits a brand of music cooked up by art-minded gadget-freaks practicing in a basement ten hours a day. You may think these fellas aren't serious, but it takes serious dedication to play a hostile club and to keep repeating the call-and-response chorus from Jocko Homo for fifteen minutes until the audience literally comes onstage to fight you! This album made it to number 12 in the UK, but only 79 in the US, which is actually impressive considering how many musical barriers they had to break through.

Duty Now For The Future - Songs like Clockout, Timing X, Blockhead and S.I.B. finally get professional-studio treatment, and the results are exciting. The boys blamed Ken Scott for what they deemed a rather lightweight sound, but you can take that with a grain of salt, given how uncompromising this entire album sounds. The Day My Baby Gave Me A Surprize is a Hollis Hot Pick!

Freedom Of Choice - This is the album that allowed Devo to crossover, giving mainstream music lovers everywhere a true freedom of choice. Side one is a perfect side--but don't sleep on side two's Gates Of Steel, which is one of my top five Devo songs. It was released as a single with my beloved Snowball on the other side. Neither side was marked with a letter, allowing listeners to use their freedom of choice on which was the A side!

New Traditionalists - Devo concerts for this album saw the boys wear their "Utopian boy scout uniforms," but they might as well have performed in body armor given how confrontational their message was on Through Being Cool. The song was also used to great effect in the animated movie Heavy Metal. Some of the greatest Devo concerts available are from the shows on this tour, especially Live 1981 Seattle.

Oh, No! It's Devo - More synth, less guitars, same infectious results. Patterns is my favorite deep cut on this album. Then again, it's hard to call anything else a deep cut when one of the other songs on the album, I Desire, credits gunman John Hinckley as a co-writer.

Shout - As I said, I'm not the biggest fan of Shout, but I love what they did to Hendrix on R U Experienced. You've got to hear it...

Total Devo - This album is slightly better than I lead you to believe in the episode, thanks to Baby Doll, Happy Guy and Some Things Never Change; but it had trouble overcoming both the absence of Alan Meyers and a pedal-to-the-metal 80s production gloss that made these songs sound way too much like the mainstream music they were ridiculing.

Smooth Noodle Maps has its moments (Post Post-Modern Man, Mountain Dew, A Change Is Gonna Cum), and the entire Something For Everybody LP is a strong return to form for the band, but the albums made by the Classic Five will always have a special place in my heart. That said, pick up Something For Everybody. It's really good...
